Isshin-Ryu is a style of Okinawan Karate founded by Tatsuo Shimabuku in 1953. Isshin-Ryu Karate is a synthesis of Shorin-Ryu karate, Goju-Ryu karate and Kobudo. The name “Isshin-Ryu”

literally means, “one heart method”. Isshin-Ryu is recognized as one of the four traditional forms of Okinawan Karate by Okinawan Prefecture Rengokai Masters.

Our Philosophy

“Nothing is more harmful to the world, than a martial art that is not effective in actual self-defense”. -Choki Motobu

“The ultimate aim of martial arts is not having to use them”. -Miyamoto Musashi

These two quotes by martial art legends, sums up Sumisu Dojo’s philosophy perfectly. At Sumisu Dojo, you will develope the knowledge, tools and self confidence to handle yourself
in whatever troublesome situation may come, but also the discipline and character to avoid those situations whenever possible.

Our lineage

The founder of Isshin-Ryu Karate, was born September 9, 1908 in Kyan Village on the Island of Okinawa. Master Shimabuku was recognized throughout the Ryukyu Islands, as one of the leading practioners of both Shorin-Ryu and Goju-Ryu karate. He won fame and recognition at a large martial arts festival in Fatima Village, where he impressed everyone with his flawless kata performance. He also shocked the spectators with his ability to drive nails into pieces of wood with his bare hands. Master Shimabuku took the best of Shorin-Ryu and Goju-Ryu, as well as making changes to what he considered flawed fundamentals to create Isshin-Ryu. He later added weapons to complete the sysytem. Master Shimabuku died May 30, 1975.

Master Tatsuo Shimabuku

Master Uezu is the son-in-law of Master Shimabuku and a 10th degree Black Belt. In 1967, he was chosen by Master Shimabuku to travel to North America to represent Isshin-Ryu by conducting classes and seminars. Master Uezu was inducted into the Isshin-Ryu Hall Of Fame in 1997.

Master Angi Uezu

Sensei Thomas Smith was a youth amateur boxer and boxing coach. Sensei Smith started karate as an adult only to learn the kicks, but soon fell in love with the mind-body-spirit and self defense aspects of the Art. Sensei Smith was promoted Black Belt by Sensei Joseph Lembke, whom he trained under for 9 years at JL Karate Center before opening Sumisu Dojo.
